Somehow that little conversation at the end doesn't sound promising for Ortega. If it's the way it sounds and Sloane knows, then that's really low. You don't do that to another person. But lets hope it's more innocent than it sounds, though with the general tone of this story, I just find myself looking towards the worst. You know almost like the pre-women's rights movement time but with male-carriers taking the place of women. Though a bit different I guess because they're taking away rights from those who were born with it instead of those without rights being born into the lack of rights. You even have the two sides and the shady middle ground. The ones who've accepted their lot in the life and lack of rights they have like it's just a change in temperature and even seem to enjoy it (the group who seem to always be brushing their hair), the ones who rebel against it violently (Jesse definitely), and the ones who obviously are not happy but feel trapped into accepting (Vichy and Sloane too).
I did have one question though, what's 'mestizo'? I can make a guess, but I want to be sure. I also had a few more questions. Despite the general depressing overtone of the story, will the be a happy ending for Jesse or any of the other carriers (Vichy, Ortega, etc)? And also, are there any women left? It doesn't seem like there are, or maybe it's just that the women are sterile. I couldn't completely tell

Mestizo means a person of mixed ancestry, but I used it here in a more general sense than it's commonly used now; in this AU, Mexico, parts of Central America, the United States and Canada are merged into a smaller number of super-nations.
And there will be happy endings. There are always happy endings.
And there are some women...there are rare ones who were unaffected by plague, either by extreme isolation (e.g. on some very very small islands) or because, as in Soria's case, they are in some way removed from danger.

Ugh! The males are so arrogant and conniving. I hope that what James and Clint have in store for Ortega isn't too bad, or that he'll find some way to get out of it. I feel kind of desperately hopeless for all the carriers...they're always being manipulated.

These poor people! I love Jesse's stubborness but something terrible is going to happen to him. I hope Vichy will not be harmed too much.
