That's AWESOME.
I especially liked the following parts:
None of the other heroes recognised him, dressed in his rusted, dirty armour… that he had ‘borrowed’ from an elderly hero who really didn’t need it any more. Who needed armour when they were dead anyway?

“Why is the largest room in the castle empty?” he asked himself, retreating from the room for a moment.
Then he burst back in, half expecting to catch some kind of illusion falling. But no. The room was still empty. He left and jumped back in one more time, just for good measure.
